Most people move a bottle away from the radiator and consider the job done. The evidence points somewhere else.
Why does storage matter?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a plant extract and like most natural compounds it degrades when it is left in the wrong conditions. A 2026 study followed CBD oils for 180 days across different temperatures and light conditions. The results were clear: light was the most important factor in every sample. Whatever else was changed, the highest degradation happened with exposure to light. Temperature mattered too, but far less predictably.
This is not a new finding. A 1976 paper reached the same conclusion and was careful to specify light rather than direct sunlight. Ordinary indoor lighting counts. Fifty years apart, the two studies agree.
Kept in the dark at room temperature, a bottle of broad-spectrum oil holds its strength for 12 to 24 months. Left in the light, noticeably less.
Temperature matters less than most people think. Light matters more.
The three rules
1. Keep it dark
Light breaks cannabinoids down, which is why quality oils come in dark amber or opaque glass. The bottle does some of the work for you, but not if it sits on a countertop. A cupboard or a drawer is better.
2. Keep it sealed
Every time you open the bottle, oxygen gets in. Use it, then close it firmly and keep the dropper clean.
3. Keep it cool
Room temperature is fine, ideally below 21°C. What you are avoiding is anywhere that gets warm: a sunny windowsill or the shelf next to a radiator. The fridge works if your kitchen runs hot, but most homes do not need it.

What about gummies and chocolate?
Gummies and chocolate are more stable than liquid oils, because they contain no carrier oil to go rancid. Keep them in their original packaging somewhere cool and dry. The chocolate should stay below 20°C so it does not melt.
How can you tell when it is past its best?
If the oil smells musty or sour, looks unusually cloudy or tastes off, it is past its best. It will not harm you, but the active compounds will have degraded. There is more on this in our guide to whether CBD oil expires.
