In short: Store your CBD oil in a cool, dark place — a kitchen cupboard or drawer works well. Keep the lid tightly closed to limit air exposure, and avoid storing it near ovens, radiators, or windowsills. Properly stored, most oils last 12 to 24 months. Refrigeration is fine but not necessary unless your home runs particularly warm.
It's a fair question. You've paid for quality oil — you want it to last. The good news: proper storage isn't complicated. It comes down to three things: temperature, light, and air.
Why Storage Matters
Cannabidiol is a natural plant extract, and like most natural compounds, it degrades over time when exposed to unfavourable conditions. Research shows that light is the single greatest factor in cannabinoid loss — even ambient room lighting has an effect. Heat and oxygen accelerate the process further.
Stored well, a bottle of broad-spectrum oil will retain its potency for 12 to 24 months. Stored badly, it can lose effectiveness in weeks.
The Three Rules
1. Keep it cool
Room temperature is fine. Ideally below 21°C. Avoid anywhere that gets warm: next to the oven, on a windowsill, near a radiator. The fridge works if your kitchen runs hot, but it's not necessary for most homes.
2. Keep it dark
UV light breaks down cannabinoids. This is why quality oils come in dark amber or opaque glass bottles — they block light. Store the bottle in a cupboard or drawer rather than leaving it on a countertop.
3. Keep it sealed
Every time you open the bottle, oxygen gets in. Use it, then close it firmly. Keep the dropper clean — touching it to your mouth and putting it back introduces bacteria that can accelerate degradation.
Light is the greatest single factor in cannabinoid loss — even ambient room lighting counts.

What About Other Products?
Gummies and chocolate are more stable than liquid oils — they don't contain carrier oils that can go rancid. Keep them in their original packaging in a cool, dry place. The chocolate should stay below 20°C to avoid melting.
Signs It's Time to Replace
If your oil smells musty or sour, looks unusually cloudy, or has an off taste — it's past its best. It won't harm you, but the active compounds will have degraded. We've covered this in more detail in our guide: Does CBD Oil Expire?
